Elena Rybakina has welcomed a new member to her household, introducing a puppy named Toby as she takes a break from tennis following
her withdrawal from the
Wuhan Open. The world No. 1 shared a photograph of her new companion on social media, offering fans a glimpse into her life away from the court after a demanding stretch of the season.
Toby's arrival comes at a particularly eventful moment for the Kazakh. Rybakina claimed her third Grand Slam title at the US Open in September, defeating Aryna Sabalenka in the final to reach the top of the WTA rankings for the first time. She subsequently travelled to Beijing for her first tournament as world No. 1, but her Asian swing did not go as planned.
Rybakina suffered a
surprise three-set defeat to world No. 118 Alina Charaeva in the second round of the
China Open, losing 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. She later withdrew from Wuhan because of a foot injury, deciding to take additional time to recover rather than continue competing through the problem.
With no matches scheduled for this week, Rybakina has an opportunity to rest before the final stretch of the season. She is expected to return at the Ningbo Open from October 19 to 25, where she will defend her title, before finishing her campaign at the WTA Finals in Indian Wells in November.
Toby arrives as Rybakina prepares for the season finale
Rybakina introduced Toby through a photograph shared on social media on Monday. The puppy was pictured sitting inside a carrier in a car, with the tennis star announcing his arrival with a brief caption welcoming him home.
The post offered a lighter update following a difficult few days on court. Rybakina had entered the Asian swing in the strongest position of her career after winning the US Open and taking over the No. 1 ranking from Sabalenka. However, her early Beijing defeat and subsequent withdrawal from Wuhan have forced her to adjust her schedule as she manages the foot problem.
The priority now is to arrive at the final tournaments of the season in suitable physical condition. Rybakina has already qualified for the WTA Finals, which will take place from November 8 to 15, giving her some breathing room as she decides how to approach the remaining weeks of the campaign.
Ningbo will provide her next opportunity to compete, with the Kazakh returning as defending champion at the WTA 500 event. A successful title defence would also help her strengthen her position in the WTA Race, although her immediate focus is likely to be ensuring that the foot injury does not become a longer-term concern.
For now, Toby gives Rybakina a new companion during her time away from the tour. After a season that has brought two Grand Slam titles and a historic rise to world No. 1, the Kazakh has one more reason to enjoy a quieter week before returning to competition. Her focus will soon shift back to tennis, but her latest social media update has offered a welcome glimpse of a different side of her life.
