Peyton Stearns was tipped in our five dark horses to watch for the French Open but is out within the first hour at Roland Garros with rising German No.1, Eva Lys paying heed to the recent form of the American.
It can often be the curse of doing so well in the traditional warm-ups that the form doesn't come out in the main event and Stearns embodied that as she was well beaten by Lys 6-0, 6-3 on Sunday afternoon.
Lys though has Grand Slam form, she reached the latter stages of the Australian Open earlier this season as a Lucky Loser. Since then though the 23-year-old gets into these tournaments on merit over needing qualifying.
With rain looming in the air, Stearns desparetely needed a rain delay that didn't come as Lys thrashed her in the opening set and then carried it on. Stearns got some semblance of a foothold in the second but only to be broken again at 4-3 with Lys sealing a 5-3 lead and she sealed the win from there.
She effectively takes the American's seed over and faces Victoria Mboko next up who has just won against Lulu Sun in one of the other leading winners of the day. Zheng Qinwen likely awaits the winner of that tie.
The rising Canadian is a real danger as she has shown all season on the ITF tour and thrashed Sun 6-1, 7-6 in the end after having already won through qualifying.
While Stearns didn't live up to her billing, Elina Svitolina did. The Ukrainian won 6-1, 6-1 against Zeynep Sonmez.
One of the real stars of the clay court summer, she has done it again wrapping it up in just over an hour. The winner of Siegemund v Bondar awaits with likely Strasbourg champion Elena Rybakina in the third round.
