The Entry List has been confirmed for the 2025 ASB Classic which is due to take place between December 30 - January 11, 2025 albeit with defending champion Coco Gauff not returning.
A usual haunt for Gauff, she defeated Elina Svitolina last year 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 to win the title. It was a seventh career title and first since winning the 2023 US Open. It was also the first time that Gauff had defended a title in her career.
But alas, it will not be a three peat for the American who has instead decided to play United Cup instead of going to New Zealand. Interestingly though as was the case last year, it is full of players wanting a return to the top.
Headlined by Madison Keys, it will also feature Elise Mertens, Amanda Anisimova and also Naomi Osaka. The former World No.1 has a point to prove. Into the second year of her return, she has performed at times and also flattered to deceive at others.
Albeit the issue is when she gets on a roll, she gets tripped up as was the case at the China Open leading Coco Gauff and then getting injured which derailed the remainder of her 2024 season. But with new coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, that stage is there to set up a return up the rankings and with minimal money to defend, it is very much an upward trajectory.
The same of sorts can be said for Emma Raducanu who ended the season near perfectly for confidence. After some months out with injury and a lot of doubts levied at her head, she returned at the Billie Jean King Cup and was excellent. Albeit representing herself over her country in this one, Raducanu will hope to perhaps play more in 2025 after a stop start year did nothing but dent the confidence.
She lost last year to Elina Svitolina on her return to the sport. While Anisimova also lost to Marie Bouzkova. Both returned this time last year and both play Auckland again.
