Maria Sakkari allowed nerves to get better of her in yet another final as Swiatek bested her in the
Indian Wells final.
The Greek player has issues in the final and it's a well documented fact that has her without a trophy for a couple of years now. Since then Sakkari played in a couple of finals but never quite found the way to overcome her nervousness in big matches. She was asked about that after her win over Badosa in the semifinal and she said:
"Even legends like
Roger Federer and
Rafael Nadal get nervous
sometimes. It is not easy to always remain calm, also due to the
enormous pressure that rests on your shoulders in some situations. I
think it's part of our job."
She further said:
"You have to learn to accept it and
live with it. You don't experience the same sensations every day,
otherwise you would be a robot. The ability to manage difficult moments
is what distinguishes the champions from the rest of the players."
