Jessica Pegula drank beer during a press conference before her doping test. The world No. 6 made her debut at the
US Open with a great win against her friend
Shelby Rogers, who played her last tournament as a professional and had a good farewell at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Pegula’s best performance at Flushing Meadows was back in 2022 when the American reached the quarter-finals of the US Open for the first time in her career and faced world No. 1 Iga Swiatek. The Polish player won 6-3, 7-6, eliminating the last remaining local player in the women’s draw.
The then 28-year-old player surprised everyone in the press conference when she casually opened a beer while answering questions. Pegula mentioned it was the best solution to speed up her doping test: "I'm trying to pee for doping," she said. "Although it does help ease the loss!" Pegula added.
"I wish I could have done it here at my home Slam, but I guess not. I wish I didn't have to play Iga every quarter-final or Ash Barty, who seem to be the two people who don't really lose that often,” she commented. "I mean, I had a great year at the Slams. I know there's still some tournaments left. I'm a little deflated right now. I just wish it would have been different tonight."
After defeating Rogers in the first round, Pegula will seek to finally break the second-round barrier in a Grand Slam this year. She hasn’t had much luck in the majors, having lost in the second match of the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and missing Roland Garros, leaving her with just a 3-2 record in majors this season.
Her next opponent will again be an American, as she faces former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin, who recently eliminated Emma Raducanu in three sets.
