Angelique Kerber has not had the best time of it since she returned as a mother on the WTA Tour with the former World No.1 losing six of her first seven matches. But there is some cause for optimism after her opener at
Indian Wells.
Kerber was special from start to finish as she took down Petra Martic 6-3, 6-4 to book a second round clash with Jelena Ostapenko at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden and she was pleased to be back as well as giving a message to her daughter, Liana who recently turned one.
“It feels so great to be back on court and playing here in front of you guys again,” said Kerber to the crowd assembled on Stadium 1. “I think this is what I really love, to play tennis in front of the crowd, giving all that I can. It’s so nice to be back here at Indian Wells.”
“I was just trying to move well and keep the ball in the court,” the former World No. 1 said. “It’s always tough when you haven’t had too many matches in the last few months, I am just trying to stay here in the moment, trying to play as many matches as I can, trying to play point by point.”
"You know it's crazy how fast one year went, but the message to her would be just follow your heart, enjoy what you love and dream big," she replied when asked to give a message.
