Two Spaniard had very different days at the office today with Muguruza battling past Linda Fruhvirtova while Badosa crashed out against Martic.
Paula Badosa had high hopes for the
US Open but she never grew comfortable with the tennis balls used. She spoke about them often leading up to the event and despite taking the opening set against Martic, Badosa still looked a bit shaky.
As soon as she started to miss more and the doubt came it was over. 6-1 was the score for Martic in the second set and 6-2 in the final set. The Croatian did play one hell of a match hitting 35 winners to only 19 unforced errors which was better than Badosa's 30 and 31.
Garbine Muguruza had it easier and with a better final result. She faced teenage sensation Fruhvirtova who is very talented but not yet physically there to compete with such a strong player as Muguruza. The Czech player was quite nervous early dropping the set 0-6 behind zero winners and eight unforced errors.
Linda did much better in the 2nd set taking an early 3-0 lead finally free of the nerves. She kept it up for a while but allowed Muguruza to battle back and even take a 5-4 lead. The Spaniard served for the match and faced 0-40 and four total breakpoints but survived to close it out.
