It has been more than a year since Garbiñe Muguruza played her last match on the WTA circuit before temporarily retiring from tennis and taking some time for herself. That match was at the Lyon Open last January 30, 2023, where she lost to Linda Noskova. Since then, the Spaniard has not wanted to compete again.
In a year where the Paris Olympics will be played, Muguruza has not yet made it clear whether she will return to the circuit in 2024 or will take another year to rest mentally. In fact, in her latest statements after appearing as a guest on the "Maestros de la Costura" program, the Spaniard has sown even more doubts than there were, far from clarifying what her plan is to return to training and WTA tournaments.
"I took a break, a sabbatical year. It was good for me, I needed it. The competition and travel are very hard," said Garbiñe Muguruza. "You have to see how the issue of playing, not playing, develops. I let the time pass and that's it. Little by little," she concluded when asked if she would try to compete in the Olympic Games.
At a time when Spanish tennis is at a low point, with Rafa Nadal and Paula Badosa dealing with physical problems, and Carlos Alcaraz, still going far in major tournaments, without winning a title since Wimbledon 2023 against Novak Djokovic in that epic final, the return of Muguruza would be an injection of hope for the fans, especially for the women's circuit.
