In a highly anticipated meeting between two players seen as the future of tennis, Coco Gauff took apart Mirra Andreeva with relative ease on Wednesday evening at the 2023 US Open.
One of the favourites for the title in New York this week, it was a 6-3, 6-2 dismantling from the sixth seed who having Brad Gilbert by her side has began a reign as one of the most in-form players in the sport right now.
That was evident as Andreeva continued to be frustrated throughout the tie and Gauff simply went about her business.
In the opening set unlike her display against Siegemund where it was more a case of her being frustrated, Gauff was allowed to flourish with her devastatingly good groundstrokes starting to show. She broke at 3-1 up and consolidated the serve as the match already looked beyond the capabilities of the 16-year-old.
It was highly anticipated this match for a reason with Andreeva taking a set off Gauff at Roland Garros and being full of praise for the American before petulance began to creep in.
This was also the case here. Andreeva fought back to 5-3 as she aimed to give Gauff a real match, it was too little too late though in the opener as the American closed it out.
But Gauff began the second with real momentum again. She broke at 2-1 in the second set as well as 4-2 and steamed to victory with no sort of comeback this time. Seriously superb from the American who is the big name on the lips of the home crowd and continues to show why.
