Petra Kvitova saved a match point in her match against Minnen to win 6-7(3) 7-6(5) 6-1.
It was not a very good match from Petra Kvitova early as she struggled mightly against Greet Minnen having to save a match point en route to a 2-1 win. Kvitova reached the semifinal last year and expressed content with her form heading into Roland-Garros this year but early it was not good. She admitted as much by saying:
"I would say that from my side it wasn't really good from the beginning. I was struggling, I was missing a lot, I was double-faulting a lot. I didn't really feel myself that well. I was pretty tight. And, yeah, it was really tough. I mean, I was fighting not only with her but with myself as well."
Despite the struggles, Kvitova was adamant about continuing to play her style of play which resulted in 44 unforced errors in the match. On the approach she said:
"I was just hoping that some point would just turn the match... I was just playing point by point. I started to serve a little bit better in the second set, and that was pretty important."
To end the interview Kvitova gave a brilliant assesmtne on the match saying:
"I'm glad that in the end I beat myself as well and beat her, so that counts."
Kvitova will need to do much better in the next round if she wants to repeat the success she had last year.
