Pablo Andujar completed a stunning comeback win over
Dominic Thiem at the
Roland Garros after being down 0-2 in over 4 hours of play.
It was a marvellous performance by Pablo Andujar in the Roland-Garros 1st round against Dominic Thiem whom he defeated 4-6 5-7 6-3 6-4 6-4. Dominic Thiem appeared to be cruising in his 1st round match against Andujar after going up 2-0 in sets. Andujar was not able to find a way to overcome a very strong Thiem but as the match went on he did.
Thiem had chances to end the match in the 3rd set but Anadujar saved several break points to stay in the match. At 4-3, he finally got his first break point and used it to take a lead. Composed as ever he closed the set with 6-3. Thiem once again had a great opportunity to take an early lead in set number 4.
Andujar saved two consecutive break points at 1-0 for Thiem to make it 1-1. After that botched opportunity, Thiem completely collapsed giving Andujar a double break lead which the Spaniard turned into a 6-4 lead. Thiem got one break back and had a chance at 5-4 to pull the other back but Andujar once again proved too calm.
In the 5th set, Thiem looked a bit deflated as he lost his serve in the first game. He rallied back in the next game to make it 1-1 but Andujar was able to break him once more taking a 4-2 lead. Andujar played a really composed brand of tennis playing very calm in key points of the match.
In the end, Andujar closed it out with 6-4 for a major upset at the
French Open. It took him four and half hours for the amazing comeback which is the 2nd time he came back against a top 10 player to win (vs Federer at Geneva Open).
