Jessica Pegula, the current World No.5 as expected will not play at the 2024 French Open with the American withdrawing prior to the draw taking place with multiple withdrawals on Wednesday.
Pegula has not been seen on the court for just over a month and said that she was possibly set to miss Roland Garros after withdrawing from Rome. But this in itself wasn't certain with Pegula returning to the court training albeit at a snails pace.
The World No.5's injury status is unknown realistically with Pegula initially playing Billie Jean King Cup albeit slightly injured and deciding against playing Stuttgart due to turnaround. But from there, she started to withdraw from tournaments due to injury. She did have a neck issue earlier in the season for instance.
The only two silver linings for Pegula sit in that she said that if it was a week more, she would've been ready which means that she can hit the grass court season running and also that she's got a new puppy. She is set to return in just over three weeks at Libema Open 's-Hertogenbosch and will also play the Berlin Ladies Open. So all roads lead to grass from here for Pegula who quipped that she needs to get her match count up also.
It has been a fairly torrid season for Pegula who went from being the consistency queen of the WTA and playing most matches on the tour to not playing at all and being out for most of it. But it seems there is some light at the end of the tunnel.
"Hi guys - unfortunately pulling out of @rolandgarros this year. I’m just about back to practicing normal (haven’t had any issues for weeks) but played it super safe with recovery & return to play. If I had another 5-7 days I would have been there 100%," she wrote on Instagram.
"So I will definitely be back for a full grass season and the rest of the summer and grinding out the rest of the year. Gotta get that match count up. In the meantime I got a new puppy,"
