Bianca Andreescu experienced a peculiar situation in her match against Barbora Krejcikova in the first round of the Canadian Open. The local star claimed victory in the clash between Grand Slam champions that marked the start of the tournament, though she suffered an injury precisely when she had match point in her favor.
The former US Open champion secured a 6-3, 6-4 victory in what was perhaps the most anticipated first-round match. Andreescu had received a wildcard from the organization, while Krejcikova had barely made the cut to enter the tournament – after a significant drop in ranking to No. 80 following her failure to defend her Wimbledon title. Undoubtedly, both players have suffered from injuries.
It had been a high-level match, in which both had looked physically well and where break opportunities abounded for both players. During the first set, 'Bibi' had to save up to 6 break points against her to stay in the match, while a single break in the 6th game was enough to take the lead and then close out the set on her first set point at 6-3.

Andreescu's Resilience Tested: From Dominance to On-Court Injury Scare

Towards the second set, things began to shift in favor of the Czech, who secured an early break and, with good service games, took a 3-0 lead. However, Andreescu would then react, responding effectively in critical points. The Canadian won the next 5 games consecutively, saving three break points against her and converting 2 out of 4 opportunities in her favor.
Things were entirely in Andreescu's favor; she was up 5-3 and on the verge of a victory that would take her to the second round and be a significant confidence booster, especially considering she was playing at a high level, particularly in critical points, and against a two-time Grand Slam champion opponent.
Andreescu was serving to close out the victory and had her second match point when, in the middle of a rally, a bad landing on her left foot apparently resulted in an injury, just one point away from securing the win. Andreescu cried out loudly in pain and had to receive medical attention on court, where ice was applied to the affected area.
Andreescu was visibly frustrated and in tears while receiving medical attention. Krejcikova, meanwhile, waited to see what would happen, and Andreescu decided to continue playing, given how close she was to victory.
The situation seemed to distract the former world No. 2 Krejcikova, who, despite Andreescu's obvious issues with her footing, made unforced errors on her next two serves, ultimately guaranteeing Andreescu's win despite the injury and her passage to the semifinals.
However, she was clearly affected after the match, raising serious doubts about whether she will be able to step onto the court for the second round. Andreescu is once again complicated by an injury, and her face said it all, while she could barely respond to the on-court interview minutes later.
"At the end, I got very lucky. It’s very unfortunate. I don’t know what to say," the 2019 US Open champion commented before breaking into tears during the interview. "I mean, you guys are everything honestly, thank you so much. These moments are never easy, so I'm just super happy that I was able to pull through and it was thanks to you guys, thank you so much."
The Canadian is scheduled to face none other than world No. 5 Mirra Andreeva in the second round, although given the injury and Andreescu's reaction, serious doubts remain about whether she will be able to play.
