Billie Jean King Cup’s this year’s edition is set to be without
some notable players which has raised doubts about the future of the competition.
The likes of tennis stars Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula will
not be a part of the team that will be representing the US in the competition
which will be played in the Spanish city of Seville from November 07-12.
Billie Jean King was clearly unhappy with the development as
she was quoted in a report stating: “We’ve had our (November) date for a long
time, you should ask the WTA [that question], because they’re the ones who put
their date (for the WTA Finals) in . . . We all need to get together to come up
with a calendar so that everyone knows what’s going to happen.”
It is becoming evident that team events are not as
attractive to the players as the singles competitions which is why top players
are now more interested in playing events where they can participate in an individual
capacity.
This year, the primary problem has been the dates where the
window is not big enough for top players to participate.
Despite the withdrawal of a few notable players, some big-name
players will still take part in the event including the likes of 2022 Wimbledon
champion Elena Rybakina and the reigning Wimbledon winner Marketa Vondrousova.
Therefore, it is worth mentioning that if the WTA manages to
get a better window for the event, even more top players are likely to play in
the event.
