Three-time Olympic gold winner Jackie Joyner-Kersee believes there will never be another
Serena Williams.
The 42-year-old is often regarded as the greatest women’s singles
in the history of the Open era, having won 23 Grand Slam titles.
Joyner-Kersee, who won three Gold medals in the track and field
category in 1988 and 1992, was quoted in a report where she heaped praise on Serena
and stated that it is unlikely to have another player of similar quality.
"There will never be another Serena,” she said. “But
there will be someone else because what Serena has been able to do is set the
standard and I don't even think Serena wants that.
“I do know she'll continue to be a part of the pages and
chapters of books, newspapers, and magazines so everyone can learn.
"Serena has evolved and she will continue to evolve. People
are embracing her as being more than just a tennis player. She's an advocate
who fights for gender equality and when there's injustice, she's out there
fighting for justice and she will continue to do that."
Serena retired from the sport last year after struggling
with fitness concerns and a dip in form.
In total, the
Atlanta-born ended up winning 73 titles in her illustrious career that lasted
for more than 25 years.
