Karolina Muchova expressed disbelief after her victory over
Aryna Sabalenka at the 2023
French Open.
The Czech tennis player entered
Roland Garros without being seeded but managed to reach her first Grand Slam final. Muchova has always been a formidable opponent and had previously reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon twice (2019, 2021) and the semifinals at the Australian Open (2021), but had never gone beyond the third round at the French Open until now.
Her victory in the semifinals was a surprise, considering she was facing Aryna Sabalenka, the world No. 2 and champion of the 2023 Australian Open, who was also leading the race to the WTA Finals.
Muchova saved a match point when she was trailing 5-2 in the third set but rallied back to win the match 7-6(5), 6-7(5), 7-5. She mentioned that the key to her victory was maintaining composure and motivation throughout the encounter.
“I’ve heard
people tell me [my game is incredible]. I don’t want to hear it or get it into
my head too much and become cocky. I’m just trying to play my game; we work on
it and I’m glad it worked so well.
"Look
around. It’s easy [to stay composed and motivated] in this beautiful stadium
with so many people watching. It goes nicely with everyone. I hear my name and
people cheering for me when I go for my towel. It’s an incredible feeling,”
Muchova said.
"I don’t really
know what happened; the atmosphere, the people were pushing me all the
matches," she added. "I tried to keep fighting and it worked. I’m so
happy
Muchova will play on Saturday against world No. 1 and 2-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek.
