Jannik
Sinner commented that he doesn't worry too much about
Carlos Alcaraz and is
focused on following his own path.
World No. 6
had a great week at the Canadian Open to claim his first Masters 1000 title,
after two finals at the Miami Open (2021, 2023) and two semifinals at Indian
Wells and Monte-Carlo this year.
Sinner's
impressive performance over the last two years despite his young age of 22 has
led to comparisons with Holger Rune and Carlos Alcaraz, both close in age at 20
years old and also established in the top-10.
Especially
with Alcaraz, he has a rivalry, as they have played each other 6 times, with the
H2H tied at 3-3. Among those matches, they played the final in Umag and
semifinals at Indian Wells and the Miami Open, in addition to a memorable match
in the quarterfinals of the 2022
US Open.
Sinner
recently commented in an interview with Corriere della Serra that he is solely
focused on his tennis and continuing to follow his own path:
“I don’t
send him any messages, I continue on my way. If I look too much at others, I
don’t focus on myself. And instead, I have to be good at leaving out any extra
thoughts,” said Sinner.
However,
the Italian suffered an early defeat this week at the
Cincinnati Open against
world No. 66 Dusan Lajovic. This was Sinner's last match before competing in
the US Open. The Italian had the opportunity to enter as the 4th seed, allowing
him to avoid Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, and Daniil Medvedev at least until the
semifinals.
In the case
of achieving a good result in Cincinnati, he missed the chance and now awaits
the draw that will define his path in the United States. The five players who
had the possibility to claim that spot faced a challenging start, as besides
Sinner, Rune, Ruud, Tsitsipas, and Rublev were all eliminated.
