Iga Swiatek has given her reaction after her shock defeat to Anna Kalinskaya in the semi final of the Dubai Tennis Championships. Swiatek went down 6-4 6-4 to Kalinskaya on Friday, and admitted to reporters afterwards that fatigue had played it's part.
"Usually, when I tell myself what to do, I can improve my game but today I was so out of power and tired that I just couldn't. Day by day, it was a little bit worse. I was talking to you about it because it didn't really make sense to go over it," said the World No. 1.
"I would say the preparation was the best I could do anyway but I wasn’t able to make anything that made sense today on the court. Maybe I did in the first six games."
"I feel like it was more about me and my level"
Swiatek, who was looking to go one better in Dubai this year after reaching the final in 2023, admitted that while her opponent played well, she was looking more at herself for reasons for this defeat. "I mean she [Kalinskaya] played well and for sure she deserves to be in the final, but I feel like it was more about me and my level," Swiatek added.
"I wanted to be focused on myself and I wasn’t really able to implement any tactics that I had."
Kalinskaya will face Italian Jasmine Paolini in the final on Saturday (15:00 GMT). A win for the Russian would result in her first WTA singles title.
