Ukraine’s tennis star
Elina Svitolina is optimistic that the
return of the former world number one
Caroline Wozniacki will encourage other
women players to continue playing tennis at the highest level despite having
kids.
Wozniacki is set to make a stunning return to the highest
level after taking retirement back in 2020 to give more time to her family.
Svitolina was quoted in a report where she expressed
‘respect’ for the 33-year-old and believes that her return will encourage women
tennis players to continue playing despite having kids.
"Yeah, I have a lot of respect for Caroline to come
back after two,” she said. “It's really a big challenge, and she's a great
fighter. I was not extremely surprised by her coming back because I feel like
she wants to try again to accept this challenge for her personally, and I think
it's a great one.
"Yeah, it's great that there is some girls after giving
birth coming back. I think it takes a lot of strength and a lot of hard work to
come back. Not only to be playing on tour, but also to the same level where
you've been before.
"So, yeah, it's great. It shows, I think, also how
women are -- how strong we are, and I hope that more girls also can believe
that this is possible and then can also have a career after the baby.”
The 33-year-old has an impressive record while playing at
the major events. She won her only Grand Slam back in 2018 in the Australian
Open after defeating Simona Halep of Romania in the final with a score of 7–6(7–2),
3–6, 6–4.
Other than that, the Denish tennis star also finished runner-up twice in the US Open, first in 2009 and then in 2014.
