Whether it be the actual game itself or the halftime show, the Superbowl never fails to generate interest. This year's edition left a lot of talking points, with one being the appearance of WTA legend Serena Williams during the halftime show's musical performance.
The Kansas City Chiefs faced off against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, with the Eagles prevailing in a blowout victory. However, it was the halftime show, headlined by rapper Kendrick Lamar, that had fans buzzing for days after the event.
During Lamar's performance on hit song Not Like Us, Williams make a brief cameo as she was twice spotted dancing during a ten-second window. This was enough to get fans talking, with several pondering as to the nature of Williams appearance.
The retired American went viral for crip walking during the song, a dance she performed after winning a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics in London. In an Instagram post, Williams explained how she ended up performing the dance during the halftime show.
"When Kendrick Lamar and team called and was like 'we’ve been trying to do something forever, what about this? We loved your crip walk at the Olympics after you won the gold medal,'' wrote Williams. "I’m like Super Bowl? Are you serious? When in the world would I ever be able to dance at a Super Bowl? (Never) let’s do it! I knew my winning dance after the Olympics would pay off one day. End of story."
The 23-time Grand Slam champion's appearance may not be completely coincidental. The song 'Not Like Us' is a diss track by Lamar aimed at fellow rapper Drake, who was rumored to be romantically linked with Williams several years ago. However, the relationship fizzled, and Williams is now married to Alexis Ohanian and the couple have two children.
