The bee invasion was the big talking point when it came to the victors last night at Indian Wells and Iga Swiatek was quizzed about it after benefitting from a retirement to Caroline Wozniacki. She will face Marta Kostyuk tonight for a spot in the final.
But as others marvelled at the situation and thought was this the craziest situation in the history of the sport, Swiatek had other thoughts. Without a single hesitation, the WTA Number One said that the WTA Finals in Cancun was the worst by no shadow of a doubt.
It saw Swiatek win the title and return to World Number One, but was beset by many issues including the stadium not being built, player revolt with many there in Cancun not happy with the conditions and also the lateness of the move of the tournament. It was also hurricane season in Mexico which saw Acapulco in particular tennis wise decimated and the tournament was lucky to be staged last month. So it was a cacophony of issues and the storm in a teacup for Swiatek was the worst she had encountered albeit the bee invasion did hit the headlines mainly for drama and hilarity instead of being crazy like the Cancun chaos.
"I mean, the whole Cancun situation was pretty strange. I thought honestly the stadium was going to fall apart when I was in the middle of it. I'm happy that it didn't," Swiatek replied.
She also named other times when drunk fans were shouting during her matches when she'd just started. "There were some drunk people in Melbourne once when I played my first Australian Open, I think, pro, and in Miami, but that's not strange, I guess. I mean, it's entertainment. But yeah, they were shouting and it was visible that they were drunk," she added.
