Iga Swiatek
advances to the
Indian Wells semifinals after
Caroline Wozniacki retired with
the score 6-4, 1-0 in favor of the Polish player. The former world No. 1 posed
a tough challenge to the Polish player, and in the first set, she was at least
close to her best level since returning to the WTA Tour.
Unfortunately
for the Dane, she experienced problems with one of her feet, apparently due to
an injury to a toenail, and after playing only one game of the second set, she
decided to retire from the match as she evidently couldn't move well as in the
first part of the match.
Wozniacki
showed that she was more than a good contender against the current world No. 1.
In the first game, she saved three break points against her and started a
display of good exchanges where she secured the first break in the fourth game.
Swiatek was 1-4 down in the first set, but then won the next five games in a
row to take the set 6-4.
Wozniacki
only had one break opportunity in the set and she capitalized on it, while
Swiatek had 9 and converted two, so despite Swiatek winning the set, most of
the crucial points tilted in favor of the former world No. 1 Wozniacki.
In the last
games of the first set, Wozniacki began experiencing discomfort and had to
request a medical timeout during which the bandages on one of her feet were
changed. The Dane had already called for the doctor in her previous match
against
Angelique Kerber, but she managed to finish with a victory.
Ultimately,
at the start of the second set, Wozniacki conceded her service and informed the
chair umpire that she was retiring from the match, handing the victory to
Swiatek who advances to the semifinals by 6-4, 1-0, ret.
In the
semifinals, she will play against the inspired
Marta Kostyuk (No. 31). The
Ukrainian seems to have found the consistency expected of her, after reaching
the quarterfinals in the Australian Open and now in Indian Wells.
