"I thought everything was going to be perfect" - Fernandez on shaky 12 months after US Open final

About a year ago, Leylah Fernandez reached the final of the US Open losing to Emma Raducanu in straight sets.

One year later the Canadian returns o the same place with a shaky year without many great results. She had a major injury and generally did not play that much tennis and even the little she played wasn't what she had hoped it would be following the final:

"It's not what I've imagined, obviously. I thought everything was going to be perfect. At the same time, I knew there were going to be a few bumps in the road and I was just going to have to find solutions, go through those tough moments."

Even so it was a learning experience for her as she tries to look for the positives:

"I think it was a great learning experience to not only learn about my tennis game, which I'm constantly doing, but also learn about myself, like what are things that I enjoy doing, what are the things that has helped me in those moments, trying to keep getting better and better as a person and enjoying my time on tour."

Looking ahead ot the 2022 US Open, she said:

"I'm just going to enjoy my time here and hopefully we can go for a full two weeks, but we're just going to take it one match at a time."
