Elena Rybakina returns to the Ningbo Open with a clear objective for the final weeks of the 2026 season. The defending champion is aiming to finish the year as the WTA world No. 1, but her immediate priority is to manage her physical condition after a demanding campaign and a recent foot injury that forced her to withdraw from the Wuhan Open.
The Kazakh has enjoyed a remarkable season, winning the Australian Open and the US Open while reaching the top of the world rankings for the first time in her career. Those achievements have put her in contention to end the year at the summit, although her recent results and fitness concerns have complicated the closing stretch of the campaign.
Rybakina arrives in Ningbo after an early exit at the China Open and her subsequent withdrawal from Wuhan. With limited time remaining before the season concludes, the 26-year-old must balance the desire to collect more ranking points with the need to remain healthy enough to compete at her best.
Her return to Ningbo offers an opportunity to regain momentum at a tournament where she enjoyed success last year. Rybakina defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova in the 2025 final and will now attempt to defend those points while pursuing a bigger prize: finishing the season as the leading player in women's tennis.

Rybakina puts year-end No. 1 goal ahead of Ningbo title defense

Rybakina made clear that reaching the top of the rankings is now the priority, even as she prepares to compete for another trophy in Ningbo. After a season that has already delivered two Grand Slam titles and the world No. 1 ranking, she wants to maintain her level through the final weeks without compromising her physical condition.
“Well, right now I feel that the most important [thing] is to try to finish as number one and just push for a couple more weeks, because I feel like the season has been successful but also long,” she explained in press conference.

Rybakina won three titles this year, including the Australian Open and US Open and reached the world No. 1 six weeks ago. With the year-end ranking at stake in the final part of the season, every opportunity to earn points matters, provided she can compete without aggravating her injury.
The foot problem that kept her out of Wuhan has made her return to competition particularly important, with the Kazakh looking to find the right balance between preparation, match play and recovery.
“Now I I'm focusing on my health, trying to manage the fitness, matches and everything to be able to finish strong,” Rybakina said.
The Ningbo tournament therefore represents more than a chance to defend a title. A strong run would help her maintain momentum in the race to finish the season at No. 1, but her comments suggest that staying healthy remains central to that ambition.

Defending champion returns after Wuhan withdrawal

Rybakina will be the top seed in Ningbo and has received a first-round bye. She will begin her title defense against either Cristina Bucsa or Polina Kudermetova, with the draw offering her an opportunity to build into the tournament rather than immediately face a match.
The Kazakh has positive memories of the event after winning the title in 2025, when she defeated Alexandrova in the final. Returning as defending champion gives her a familiar setting in which to resume competition after the disruption caused by her foot injury. “Well, first of all, it's very nice to be back," Rybakina added. "I have amazing memories and hopefully I can win it once more. We'll see."
Winning the title again would provide a valuable boost as she pursues the year-end No. 1 ranking, but the tournament also presents a test of her readiness following her recent withdrawal. Her early loss in Beijing and absence from Wuhan mean that she will be looking to regain match rhythm while monitoring how her body responds to competition.
Rybakina currently holds a lead of just under 1,000 points over Aryna Sabalenka in the WTA Race, while the Belarusian has only the WTA Finals remaining on her schedule. The season-ending tournament offers a maximum of 1,500 points to an undefeated champion, leaving Sabalenka with an opportunity to close the gap.
Rybakina could strengthen her position considerably by winning the Ningbo title, potentially putting herself in a position to secure the year-end No. 1 ranking without needing a deep run at the WTA Finals. She will also have another opportunity to collect points at the tournament in Tokyo next week, giving her two chances to consolidate her lead before the season-ending event.
