Belinda Bencic came out of nowhere in Tokyo to snatch the singles gold medal for Switzerland defeating Vondrousova in the final.
While unexpected the run to the medal was not undeserved for Bencic who proved the best player in Tokyo that week. She faced some stiff opposition in her run and overcame each and every opponent to the final. Upon arrival in Cincinnati, Bencic was naturally asked about it and she said:
“To win the Olympic gold medal, it's really like a dream coming true. Of course, I have dreamed about it, but you're not really going to achieve it right away and everything. It was my first Olympics. For me it was very kind of - how you say - not a surprise, but very happy that I kind of reached."
Bencic has not played since then electing to take some time off before a very important part of the season. The Swiss player has a US Open semifinal under her belt and usually performs rather well on these courts.
Bencic also reflecte about goals in the future explaining:
"Now I feel like really people are always going to ask, ‘What do you do next? What is your goal, to put pressure on everything?’ For me, achieving this, it's already amazing. If I stop my career tomorrow, I can be very happy about everything.”
