Iga Swiatek is back in Paris and she made a winning start to her title defence campaign beating Cristina Bucsa in two simple sets 6-4 6-0.
Swiatek has been quite dominant at last year's Roland Garros losing only one set en route to the trophy. It was against Qinwen Zheng who was the player closest to beating her. This year's campaign started off well in straight sets as Bucsa put up a good fight in the first set but then completely faltered in the second set.
The first set unfolded pretty interestingly as Swiatek wasn't able to create too much pressure early on even dropping her own serve a few games into the match. She broke back immediately losing her serve once more to give Bucsa the 3-2 lead. Swiatek broke back again and then upped her level to finish off the set 6-4.
This first set was one where Swiatek was searching for the way she wanted to play. She had 9 winners and 15 unforced errors which is quite unlike her generally. She has far better control of the balls but it was her first match and a slower start was to be expected.
The second set was quite a bit better as she served her first bagel at the event. It was a dominant display against a player who could not keep up. Bucsa had only one winner in the second set and 9 unforced errors while Swiatek was pretty solid with a 9-4 line.
