Poland’s tennis star
Iga Swiatek has achieved another
milestone in her relatively young career.
The 22-year-old has recently took part in the
China Open
where she ended up lifting the title after beating Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova
in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-2.
With that victory, Swiatek has overtaken the former world number
one Naomi Osaka in terms of prize money earned.
She earned a whopping $1,324,000 after winning the title and
the overall prizemoney went up to $21,514,763.
On the other hand, Osaka, who has won four Grand Slam titles
in her career, has earned the prize money worth $21,177,252.
The victory was a much-needed one for Swiatek who has had a
mixed year at the highest level.
She started slowly but gained pace in the French Open where
she ended up defending her title after beating Czech Republic’s Karolína Muchova
in the final with a score of 6–2, 5–7, 6–4.
However, not much went right for her as she ended up losing
in the quarterfinal of Wimbledon and was later knocked out of the US Open after
suffering a fourth-round defeat to Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko with a score of
3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
That defeat proved to be the catalyst as she lost the top
spot in the WTA rankings to Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka.
