The WTA Ranking has been updated following the events of the
China Open last week, with
Iga Swiatek closing in on
Aryna Sabalenka at the top.
The Top 10 has remained the same this week, with Aryna Sabalenka holding the World No. 1 position while Iga Swiatek sits in second. However, the four-time Grand Slam champion looked to be returning to form after a difficult few tournaments as she won the WTA 500 title in Beijing.
In doing so, Swiatek was able to narrow the gap in points between herself and the top spot by nearly 500 points as the former's total rose to 8890. Sabalenka was eliminated in the quarter-final of the tournament, meaning her points rose from 9266 to 9480.
Samsonova rises while Krejcikova drops
There was more movement outside of the Top 10, with Samsonova rising six places to re-enter the Top 20 at World No. 16. This comes after the 24-year-old defeated the likes of Jelena Ostapenko and Elena Rybakina to reach the China Open final where she finished as the runner-up. The Russian has a career-high ranking of No. 12, which she achieved in February of this year.
Meanwhile, Krejcikova suffered a first-round defeat to Mirra Andreeva in Beijing, which saw her drop from No. 12 to No. 18. The Czech player rose to World No. 10 just a few weeks ago after she won the San Diego Open title but has not competed between then and last week.
Also in the Top 20, Daria Kasatkina rose one place to close in on the Top 10 at No. 12 despite a second-round defeat at the China Open, while Ostapenko went up four places to No. 13 after a run to the quarter-finals in Beijing. On the other end, Victoria Azarenka and Beatriz Haddad Maia look to be in danger of dropping out of the Top 20 as they both fell one place each to No. 19 and No. 20 respectively.
Andreeva, Fruhvirtova, and Mertens among other big movers
Elsewhere, Elise Mertens dropped twelve places and consequently fell out of the Top 40, landing at No. 41. This came after a first-round defeat to Yue Yuan at the China Open.
Teen talent Andreeva saw herself rise ten places to enter the Top 50 for the first time at No. 50 after she defeated Krejcikova and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to make the Round of 16 in Beijing. Meanwhile, Linda Fruhvirtova rose ten spots to No. 88.
