Poland’s tennis star
Iga Swiatek has achieved yet another
milestone in her relatively young career on the court.
The 22-year-old recently won the
China Open after beating Russia’s
Liudmila Samsonova in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-2.
While doing so, Swiatek became the first player since America’s
legendary tennis player and the former world number one Serena Williams to win
five or more WTA titles in back-to-back seasons.
The victory was a much-needed one for the current world number
two who has had a mixed year at the highest level.
Swiatek started the year slowly where she was knocked out of
the Australian Open after suffering a defeat in the fourth round to Elena
Andreyevna Rybakina with a score of 6-4, 6-4.
She then bounced back and defended her crown at the Roland
Garros by beating Czech Republic’s Karolina Muchova in the final with a score
of 6-2, 5-7, 5-4.
At Wimbledon, Swiatek’s journey came to an end in the
quarterfinal where she lost to Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina with a score of 7-5,
6-7, 6-2.
The US Open was perhaps the most disappointing one for the
four-time Grand Slam winner as, while defending her title, she was knocked out
of the competition after losing the fourth-round clash to Latvia’s Jelena
Ostapenko with a score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
