Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the National Bank Open in Montreal only a week after competing for Japan at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
Osaka leads a number of high-profile withdrawals that include
Iga Swiatek and
Sofia Kenin. Swiatek last played at the Olympics as well while Kenin has not played in a long time. Prior to withdrawal, Osaka was confirmed by the organisers of the WTA 1000 event as the top seed attending it however now she is out.
Osaka said on the withdrawal:
“I’m sorry to be missing out on Montreal this year. I hope to see you all in Canada next year.”
Osaka did not specify what the reason for withdrawal was as fatigue is not an issue having not played for two months. For Swiatek on the other hand it was time to rest a bit as she said:
"The first part of the season was so intense that I need a couple of days off to rest and prepare for the next few months." Sofia Kenin offered an explanation as well saying:
“While I’m making progress, my foot injury is not where I need it to be to play at the highest level. I feel another week of recovery and rehab is necessary.”
