America’s tennis star Coco Gauff quoted a song from Cardi B after securing her maiden win against the world number one Iga Swiatek.
The duo clashed in the ongoing Cincinnati Open (Western & Southern Open) semifinal on Saturday where Gauff came out on top with a score of 6-7, 3-6, 6-4.
In the previous seven meetings, the Polish tennis star came out on top on each occasion, and that too in straight sets, winning 14 sets in the process.
Gauff, after the victory, expressed her happiness while quoting a song from Cardi B by stating: “I saw a quote. ‘Knock me down 9 times, get up 10.’ It’s a Cardi B song. So in this case, knock me down 7 times, get up 8.”
The victory sets up Gauff’s final encounter of the competition against Czech Republic’s Karolina Muchova which will be played on Sunday.
The defeat will be a hard pill to swallow for Swiatek who would be hoping to continue the winning run leading up to the US Open where she will be defending her crown.
The 22-year-old won the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year in 2022 after defeating Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur in the final with a score of 6-2, 7-6.
