Spain’s tennis star
Paula Badosa has withdrawn from the
upcoming WTA event in Tokyo. The 26-year-old was once regarded as one of the
most talented players playing in women’s tennis but injuries has halted her progress
over the last few years.
Badosa, in a post on her official account on the social
media platform Instagram, revealed that she will not take part in the WTA event
in Tokyo because of a fitness concern. However, she stated that she is now
looking forward to regaining fitness and participating in the Billie Jean King
Cup.
“Because of health issues, I wasn’t able to play yesterday
and won’t be able to play Tokyo, unfortunately,” she wrote. “My 2024 season has
ended. It has been a very long season where I overcame situations I
thought were impossible. I’m, very proud of my self. I’m back where I
wanted to be an where I was aiming since my comeback. (one of the best players
in the world against) Already looking forward to recover well and prepare to
represent my country in Malaga for BJKC. Thank you for the support always. See
you soon.”
With that announcement, Badsoa’s season has finally came to
an end. The 26-year-old, who returned to the court earlier this year after
nearly missing 12 months of action because of a back injury, will be relatively
happy with her performance where she won 37 out of 55 matches and suffered just
18 defeats in the process. In the last four events, Badosa managed to play in
the quarterfinal or beyond in every one of them. Her best outing this season came
in the Mubadala Open in Washington, where she lifted the title after beating
the Czech Republic’s Marie Bouzkova with a score of 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Out of all the
Grand Slams, Badosa’s most impressive run came in the US Open, where she was
knocked out after losing in the quarterfinal to America’s Emma Navarro in straight
sets with a score of 6-2, 7-5.
