Paula Badosa and Magda Linette have been slammed by doubles great Rennae Stubbs and former coach of Serena Williams with both women dragged into respective racism controversies.
Former World No.2 Badosa was seen peeling her eyes back with chopsticks which she later apologised for with the image going viral and then being removed.
Meanwhile former World No.19, Linette posted an image of Wuhan train station sign with the caption: “The virus database has been updated” which she attempted to apologise on court. Stubbs was left befuddled by both doing it in the first place, putting it on social media and then attempting to apologise and dig themselves an even bigger hole.
“Magda Linette said what she said being in Wuhan,” said Stubbs on her podcast.
“Listen, what are you doing? And then she tried to apologize. Just don’t do it in the first place.
“Badosa, the coach putting the photo up. What are you guys doing? You gotta have a better sense of this.
“To go into a country and essentially make fun of the country you’re in, the people. It’s bad enough you’re doing it in public. But to put it out on the social media, what are you doing?”
Badosa initially apologised for doing so both on an Instagram comment and also on her X account but of course the damage was done anyway apology or not. She later withdrew from Wuhan.
“Oh no, please don’t get it that way,” she commented on an Instagram post. “Never thought it would get interpreted this way; we weren’t even imitating Asian people. I was playing around with my face and wrinkles.
“Hey guys! Really sorry, didn’t know this was offensive towards racism. My mistake. I take full responsibility. These mistakes will make me learn for next time. Hope you understand," she continued on X.
