Former world number one
Iga Swiatek has confirmed that
she will take part in the final round of the
Billie Jean King Cup. The final round of the competition will be played across three days from November 14 to 16, where 21 teams will participate and will be separated into groups of three.
The winning teams will not only participate in the
last-eight round, but they will also secure their spot in the qualifying round
of the competition next year.
Swiatek, in a post on her Instagram, announced that she will be available for the competition’s final round.
"See you in Gorzów Wielkopolski!" wrote
Swiatek. "I am happy to officially share this news -- I will be playing in
the Billie Jean King Cup playoffs. It will be a great end to the season,
playing for my country and in my country, in front of Polish fans, [on] a team
that will certainly give its all. I hope to see you there!"
Swiatek did not participate in the qualifiers against Switzerland
and Ukraine in April. Swiatek is currently placed in Group B along with Romania and New Zealand. Group A will see Team USA competing against the likes
of Denmark and Mexico. Group C will feature Argentina, Slovakia and Switzerland,
Group D will feature Czechia, Colombia and Croatia, Group E will see Australia,
Brazil and Portugal. Group F consists of Belgium, Germany and Turkiye, whereas Group G will see India, the Netherlands and Slovenia competing to find a spot in the next round.
It will be interesting to see what condition Swiatek will be in for the competition, given that she has already played a lot of tennis this season. Overall,
Swiatek has featured in 76 matches across different competitions in 2025, winning 61 and losing just 15.
During those triumphs, Swiatek lifted three titles as
well. Her first title this year was Wimbledon, where she defeated America’s Amanda
Anisimova in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-0, 6-0. While doing
so, Swiatek became the first women’s player in more than 100 years to win a final
of Wimbledon without losing a single game.
Positive development for Poland fans
Swiatek’s second title in 2025 was the Cincinnati Open, where she defeated Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in the final in straight sets with a
score of 7-5, 6-4. Swiatek’s most recent title was the Korea Open in Seoul last
month, where she defeated Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova in the final with a
score of 1-6, 7-6, 7-5.
Swiatek suffered an injury during the Cincinnati Open due to the hot weather, a condition later confirmed by her coaching staff as well. That
injury impacted the current world number two’s performances towards the latter
stages of the season. Swiatek suffered a defeat in the quarterfinal of the US
Open to Anisimova in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-3.
After that, Swiatek appeared at the China Open in Beijing, where she was knocked out after losing in the fourth round to America’s Emma
Navarro with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-0. Swiatek’s most recent appearance in a singles competition came at the Wuhan Open, where she lost in the quarterfinals to Paolini in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-2.
It is not clear whether Swiatek will feature in any more competitions before taking part in the WTA Finals, where she has already qualified, along with the likes of the world number one Aryna Sabalenka, America’s Coco Gauff, Anisimova, Jessica Pegula and Madison Keys. The last major competition
in the WTA calendar will be played from November 01 to November 08 in Riyadh, Saudi
Arabia. America’s Gauff will be defending her title this year. She lifted it
last year after beating Qinwen Zheng of China in the final.
