After the third day of action at Palermo Ladies Open, we already know 4 quarterfinalists out of which two are the Italian wild-cards Sara Errani and Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
Italian fans had three players on court on Wednesday at
Palermo Ladies Open. But before their stars arrived onto the court, they have seen a match between
Fiona Ferro and
Ekaterina Alexandrova.
It was the first meeting for Ferro and Alexandrova on the WTA circuit. The French player was on an 11-match winning streak ahead of the match against the Russian and she didn't want to lose the streak. And she succeeded in doing so when she defeated the eight-seeded Alexandrova 7-5, 6-2 to become the first quarterfinalist at the Palermo Ladies Open.
After the first match of the day, it was a great spectacle for the Italian fans. However, they were not really happy after the first match. Jasmine Paolini faced qualifier,
Aliaksandra Sasnovich who is in a great form in Italy. The Belorussian didn't lose a set in Palermo and continued in a similar style also against Paolini. Sasnovich showed a dominant performance to win the match in just 73 minutes - 6-0, 6-2, and book her quarterfinal spot.
After the sad first match for the Italian fans, it was a happy evening for them as the next two quarterfinal spots were taken by Italian wild-cards. First, Sara Errani faced Kristyna Pliskova. The Italian lost the first set, however, she managed to come back and win the match 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to become the first Italian quarterfinalist in Palermo this year.
But she won't be the only Italian playing in the quarterfinals at the Palermo Ladies Open this year. Elisabetta Cocciaretto followed her to the quarterfinals with a victory over the sixth-seeded Donna Vekic. Cocciaretto prevailed in the match to win it 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 36 minutes.
