Less than a month ago, Danielle Collins was yet to reach a WTA singles final but now the American has accumulated a 10-match winning streak that has seen her lift two titles.
The World No.28 overcame Daria Kasatkina on Sunday to lift the trophy at the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic, her second consecutive title after winning in Palermo two weeks earlier.
"It was one of my goals to win a tournament this year, and to now win two, it’s just been incredible," Collins said after her victory. "It’s still kind of hard to comprehend that I’ve won two back-to-back."
Despite squandering five championship points in her match against Kasatkina, Collins was able to squash a comeback by the Russian and power through to claim her second straight title. Having lost her two previous wins against her opponent, the 27-year old looked almost relieved once the final ball had been played.
"I think today I executed my game plan well," Collins said. "It’s tough when you go out against an opponent who runs down so many balls, anticipates so well, because a lot of times you’re having to win the point six, seven, eight times. Where certain shots would be winners against other players, they’re not going to be against Dasha because of how great of a mover and anticipator she is.
"I just had to really kind of lock into that mentality of being really patient with myself, and putting myself in an aggressive position consistently, but also accepting the fact that there were going to be some errors and mistakes along the way."
However, Collins has little time to celebrate, as she is competing at the National Bank Open (Rogers Cup) this week, where she will face Jill Teichmann in the first round.
