Petra Martic of Croatia won the Balkan derby in Lausanne beating Olga Danilovic of Serbia in the final and following the match she offered some classy comments.
It was a great week for Martic who has been dealing with a lot of struggles in the past year or so with this trophy being much needed. The final itself was well contested by both but Martic was able to grind down her opponent with some veteran tricks that Danilovic simply does not have yet. However, the Croatian is sure she'll get there:
"When I arrived here [in Lausanne] on the first day, it was the beginning of qualies; I came to check out the Center Court and the opening match was Olga. I was with my agent, and I told her, ‘I think this girl is going to be such a great player,’ and not only is she going to be, I think she already is. You already won a tournament like this, beaten me before, done so many nice things, and it’s only the beginning for you.”
The win will put Martic back inside the top 60 which is needed for her as confidence has not been present for a while. The Croatian was a top 20 player before the pandemic but things went south after that. This is a good start to get back there.
