Former world number one Belarus’
Victoria Azarenka has stated
it's hard to play in front of her six-year-old son.
The 33-year-old has been in impressive form in
Wimbledon
2023 where she has already cemented her spot in the round of 16 after defeating
America’s Sofia Kenin in straight sets in the third round with a score of 7-6,
6-2 on Friday.
Azarenka, while talking to the media in the third Grand Slam
of the year, stated that it’s hard to play in front of her young kid who is now
old enough to come and sit in the stands because of distraction.
"So now my son wants to come to my matches (smiling),”
she said. “It's still a bit of a hard feeling for me, because I get a bit
distracted. I have tried that in 's-Hertogenbosch, and it was very awesome
moment to share, but at the same time it kind of takes me a bit, you know, into
my mom mode too much rather than being a tennis player.”
Talking about her journey as a mother, the two-time
Australian Open winner stated that it remains a big challenge for her to balance work and personal life because of playing the sport at the highest level.
“For me the biggest challenge, I would say, was an emotional
attachment is kind of carrying that guilt of having time for myself and plan my
day to be sometimes a little bit selfish,” she said. “I had a feeling that I
don't want to miss out on really anything when he's growing up.”
The 2011 and 2012 Wimbledon semifinalist will face Ukraine’s
Elina Svitolina in the fourth round on Sunday.
