Jessica Pegula is through on her return to action for the first time since the Australian Open at the 2024
San Diego Open downing Jule Niemeier 6-0, 6-4 with relative ease.
Pegula who has struggled with a neck injury also had fans speculating that she was pregnant which she put to bed on social media. She is also undergoing a change with new coaches Mark Merklein and Mark Knowles in a double coaching tandem after years of David Witt who she split with recently.
But it wasn't going to set her back with Pegula easing through her business. The German struggled on her serve early on as Pegula pressured her constantly and created separation as she couldn't win a single game in the opening set falling to a 24 minute bagel against Pegula.
But it is never easy in WTA Tennis and the second set proved it. Pegula eased into a 5-1 lead and looked to put the icing on the cake of a dominant win. But Niemeier showed fight and recovered one of the breaks. She then had three consecutive break points the next time Pegula served for it, but the American wasn't going to be denied again as despite having to stave off late pressure, it was a 6-4 second set sealed. She now faces Anna Blinkova or Dayana Yastremska in the Quarter-Finals.
