Jessica Pegula won't begin her clay court season for yet another week with the American ace withdrawing from the Madrid Open having only played in Billie Jean King Cup as of late. It has been a year of ups and downs for the usual Queen of Consistency in the WTA.
She was dumped out of the Australian Open by Clara Burel and injury then forced her out of the Middle Eastern hardcourt swing. She returned in San Diego reaching the semi-final, but lost to Anna Blinkova at Indian Wells. It was good form at Miami and Charleston and despite some early issues against Belgium, her and Emma Navarro anchored Team USA home in national team duty.
But she withdrew from the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart citing not wanting to play again so soon. This time though, she is not ready to return with a potential injury stopping her. Next up after Madrid will be Rome.
"Hi guys not a great update but I got hurt this past week before Madrid and Unfortunately not ready to play. Thankful for some extra time at home and hope to be back ASAP," she wrote.
