Garbine Muguruza has had a very rough going this clay season and it continued in this match at Roland Garros as she threw away the win in the 2nd set and losing in three 6-2 3-6 4-6.
Kanepi is a very tricky player to play against because the Estonian unleashes her groundstrokes and hopes for the best. When she hits a lot of them, players fail to adjust properly and by the time you do, you're out of the event. Kanepi won her opening service game and had 40-0 on the serve of Muguruza and it seemed like Muguruza was in for another bad one.
Well, she wasn't initially as Kanepi was not able to sustain any kind of high level for much longer than that. Muguruza kept her level at a steady pace and defended well against her opponent. Kanepi's errors piled up and she had more than she had winners. In that situation, she usually ends up losing the set and she did 2-6.
In the 2nd set, Muguruza was up a break early but allowed Kanepi to find a rhythm and battled back into the match. Then Spaniard then fell apart towards the end of the set to lose it 3-6 after being up 3-2 and serving. Struggles continued in the final set as well with Muguruza barely holding her serve in the opening game. She settled for a while even forcing a few break points but could not find the breakthrough.
Then she collapsed once more towards the end losing 4-6 in the final set. The same thing happened to her a few days ago in Rabat where she was up a set and a break but lost to Trevisan in three.
