Sofia Kenin became the 2nd Roladn Garros finalist after she defeated Petra Kvitova in straight sets today.
It was a measured effort that saw Kenin defeat Petra Kvitova 6-4 7-5 to reach the Roland Garros final. The match started with Kenin playing a more balanced type of tennis that saw her combine aggressiveness with composure more efficiently than Kvitova. That allowed her to break Petra early to make it 2-1. She would add one more break, later on, to make it 4-1 but Kvitova came right back to make it 4-3. She started playing better but it wasn't enough to pull one more break back so Kenin cruised to a 6-4 first set finish.
Kvitova was more aggressive in the opening set hitting more winners but she also had more unforced errors. The 2nd set started off slowly for both players as neither committed to being too much aggressive too early. It was Kenin who upped her aggressiveness which yielded results immediately as she broke Kvitova to take a 3-2 lead before confirming the break to make it 4-2.
Kvitova wasn't shaken by the break or missed opportunities in the previous game so she quickly made if 4-3. Kenin on the other hand did the same thing in the next game as she marched on to the final. She had a chance to end it then and there but Kvitova held on to make it 5-4. When it was time to finally end it, Kvitova played an incredible game, stringed some winners together and made it 5-5. Kenin came out furious in the next game as well trying to finally end the match and she managed to break Kvitova once more.
Kenin had some issues in the final game of the match but ultimately she prevailed winning the set with 7-5. It was a tightly contested set as highlighted by the end result but Kenin was slightly better and she won. She had a positive winner to unforced error ration and Kvitova had a negative and those key points proved crucial in the end.
