Four-time Major champion
Kim Clijsters received the
Miami Open wild card, returning to the court for the first time since the last year's US Open and seeking the first victory since 2012!
The 37-year-old retired after the US Open 2012, working on her Academy and with different players. Out of a sudden, Kim announced her comeback at the end of 2019, hitting the practice court and hoping to make a return at the Australian Open. The Belgian couldn't make a comeback at the last year's Australian Open due to a knee injury, taking more time to get back at her 100% and not rushing anything.
A few weeks later, Clijsters was ready to play in Dubai, losing in the opening match to Garbine Muguruza and suffering a similar defeat to Johanna Konta in Monterrey in March. The three-time US Open champion entered her favorite Major for the first time since 2012, giving her best against Ekaterina Alexandrova but falling in three sets last September. Kim claimed two Miami Open titles in 2005 and 2010 and will compete in Florida for the first time since 2012.
"We are very excited to have Kim returning to Miami," said James Blake, Miami Open Tournament Director. "She is a tremendous player and an even better person. Plus, it's not often you get the opportunity to see someone who has been inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame compete at an event of this level."
"The Miami Open was always a favorite stop on tour for me," said Clijsters. "I have great memories and also had great results there. I'm excited to be coming back to Miami."
