Petra Kvitova and Varvara Gracheva reached the 3rd round of the US Open after solid victories on day 3 of the tournament.
The 3rd day of the
US Open saw
Petra Kvitova and Varvara Gracheva advance to the next round after victories against Kozlova and
Mladenovic. Varvara Gracheva had a tough task when she stepped onto the court to face
Kristina Mladenovic. It looked quite bad after Mladenovic won the 1st set 6-1. She was cruising and it looked like she would win quite easily.
That was not the case as Gracheva started playing much better particularly on her own serve which allowed her to give herself a chance in the tiebreak. She took it and won it 7-2 forcing a 3rd deciding set. In it she completely smashed
Mladenovic not allowing her any inch during play. To add insult to injury she fought hard to secure a 6-0 victory instead of giving her opponent at least a game in the final set.
Petra Kvitova faced off against Kozlova and it took quite some time for the Czech star to find her footing. The start was a bit shaky for her as he couldn't find a way to break through Kozlova's serve. We ended up in a tiebreak and that was the time the Czech player finally broke through. She won it 7-3 giving herself the lead.
In the 2nd set Kozlova looked quite depleted. She gave it all in the 1st set after she lost the closely contested tiebreak she completely crumbled giving Kvitova the early 3-1 lead. Things didn't got much better later on and she once again surrendered her serve to give Kvitova yet another break to make it 5-1 before ending it with 6-2.
