Fernandez on fire 🔥 @leylahfernandez takes out the No. 5 seed Zheng Qinwen 7-5, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals in Doha #QatarTotalEnergiesOpen
Minutes after Naomi Osaka booked her spot due to a walkover, Leylah Fernandez has also done so seeing off Qinwen Zheng to continue her magnificent form. It was a 7-5, 6-3 win for the Canadian at the Qatar Open.
After such stellar form to end the year, Fernandez has continued in that vein to begin 2024 after being inconsistent since reaching the 2021 US Open final.
She saw off the recent Australian Open finalist with consummate ease in straight sets and is into her second Quarter-Final of the season.
In just over an hour and a half, she saw off the Chinese ace. The first set was a close affair won 7-5, but the second was done in just over half an hour as she took the match by the scruff of the neck with a vital break to go 4-2 up unanswered and she took the win in the end. Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina will hope to follow her shortly.
