Leylah Fernandez eased into the 2nd round of the
Roland Garros by taking down
Kristina Mladenovic 6-0 7-5 coming back from 5-3 down in the 2nd set.
The Canadian did not have the greatest of clay season so far and she generally doesn't play that well on it. Last year was not much better either but she got off to a great start here thanks to a great draw. Kristina Mladenovic is far off her best and this match was perfect for Fernandez to get her feet wet and build some confidence.
The opening set was a proper confidence-builder for her as she smashed her opponent with fierce shot-making that resulted in a bagel. She opened the 2nd set totally flat probably due to relaxing a bit after the opening set. Mladenovic jumped out to a 3-0 lead but pulled the break back to make it 3-2. She then lost her serve once again giving Mladenovic the 5-3 lead.
Mladenovic wasted two set points on the serve of Fernnadze at 5-3 for her and then failed to serve out the set at 5-4. Fernandez made it 5-5 and then raced past a stunned Mladenovic who lost her serve to make it 6-5 and then bowed out at 7-5.
