The first day of the Internationaux de Strasbourg saw a number of big names kick off the WTA 500 event. While not all of them came through with flying colours, it was a relatively routine day of tennis with straight set wins dominating the first round matches in France.

Americans dominate in eastern France

To start proceedings, former world number three Maria Sakkari was blown away in a comprehensive 6-3, 6-1 defeat against Peyton Stearns. The American was coming off the back of a steep fall in the WTA rankings after failing to defend the points from her Rome Open semi-final last year. A positive result was much needed, and she secured it.
Stearns began the match with a break to love before surviving a couple of break opportunities from Sakkari. Each player would get another break point but nether were converted. Stearns then took a huge stride towards the first set, sealing a double break before going on to miss her first set point. Sakkari nabbed one of the breaks back but a third game in a row going against the serve sealed Stearns a healthy advantage.
The second set was very straightforward. The pair both commenced with a hold, but after that it was all about Stearns. She won five games on the spin, holding to love to see out a very positive win. Sakkari is with just one win on clay in 2026 with Roland Garros looming ever closer.
The American joy did not stop there. Just before the culmination of that match, Ann Li provided Maya Joint with another defeat in 2026, prevailing 6-1, 6-2. This marks an eighth consecutive defeat for the young Aussie. With just two wins in 2026, one of them in a match that lasted two games, she is in a real spot of bother.
Li was ruthless on court. After two comfortable hold, Li would save a couple of break points before running away with the set in a comfortable manner, dropping five points in the last four games. A break to love sent the American a set and break to the good. Joint held to love to close the gap to 3-2 before failing to convert three break points in the next game. These squandered chances would prove to be pivotal. Li broke once more before overcoming more Joint break points to book her spot in the second round.
The joy for USA tennis did not stop there. Emma Navarro got a much-needed confidence boost after defeating Abu Dhabi champion Sara Bejlek 6-1, 6-4. A dominant win signals a step in the right direction, albeit one of the tournament favourites in the form of Iva Jovic is her next opponent.
The pair traded breaks at the start of the match before Navarro seized control. A four-game flurry sent on her merry way to first set glory. She made it seven games on the trot by sealing a double break. Bejlek got one of them back but immediately dell further behind again. Navarro would move 5-1 ahead, eyeing a chance to seal the deal. Three match points were missed over two games, but eventually she got it completed while serving it out the second time of asking.

Contrasting result for home favourites

Lois Boisson got her first win since the China Open back in September. Injury issues have ravaged her progress in recent time, making this 6-3, 7-6(4) win over Xinyu Wang so crucial. Her Roland Garros semi-final defence will start very soon with a possible plummet down the rankings a huge possibility.
Just one break occurred in the first set. In fact, just one break point which Boisson clinically converted as she won the final three games in the set to move ahead. Wang fought back, flying into a 5-2 lead. Nevertheless, Boisson was not finished. She won four games in a row to move 6-5 ahead, serving for the match. A first match point came and went as Wang broke straight back to force a tiebreak. Furious not to get the bod done already, Boisson was not prepared to make anymore mistakes. She stormed into a 6-0 lead before taking a sixth match point to finally advance.

To complete the action, former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez ended the hopes of French wildcard Leolia Jeanjean with a 6-1, 7-5 victory. The Canadian was starting to find a bit of form after a slow start to the year before early exits in Rome and a WTA 125 event in Paris halted her rhythm.
She quickly got back on track in Strasbourg. After Jeanjean held in the first game, Fernandez ticked off six successive games while also surviving a couple of break points to win the first set. Jeanjean fought back at the start of the second set, responding well with a break of her own. Fernandez recovered that break deficit before both players missed a break point. A tiebreak looked imminent, but Fernandez made sure it would not occur. A late four-point surge confirmed the win and puts her into the next round.

Kessler, Kasatkina among names coming through qualifying

Before any first round action, qualifying for the Internationaux de Strasbourg had to be completed. Four places were up for grabs, and all four matches were swiftly concluded in straight sets.
Keeping up with the trend, McCartney Kessler another victorious American. She overcame Oksana Selekhmeteva 6-4, 6-4 in a tight match. Talia Gibson previously knocked out Eva Lys in the first round, and backed it up with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Shuai Zhang.
Oleksandra Oliynykova shared a message on Instagram attacking her opponent Yulia Putintseva over the Kazakh competing a Gazprom exhibition at the end of last year. She backed it up with a win on court, coming out in top 6-4, 6-4. The final spot was rewarded former top 10 player Daria Kasatkina who brushed Anastasia Zakharova aside 6-4, 6-2.
