Emma Raducanu's US Open triumph was predicted to have a huge impact on tennis in the UK and it's proving true.
A fairly popular sport in the country, tennis has been slowly losing out to many other sports that are both more popular and have more people participating in them. Raducanu's surprise US Open was heavily followed in the UK with the final itself being one of the most watched sports events in recent years.
That was expected to boost interest in the sport and it is proving correct. Prime Video and the LTA have together launched a new girls-only tennis programme, with the hope of inspiring the next generation of female tennis players.
The initiative is being funded by revenue made from the US Open final between Fernandez and Raducanu which was broadcast on the platform. The programme will last until 2024 and will offer access to LTA-accredited coaches across Great Britain.
On the initiative, Raducanu said:
“I’m extremely pleased to see the funds generated from the US Open Final go towards this new programme, which is a step in the right direction to bring more young girls into the sport and will continue to support a bright future for women’s tennis in this country. As an ambassador of LTA Youth, it’s great to see a complimentary program take shape and hopefully bring some more success."
