Iga Swiatek secured the China Open title after defeating Liudmila Samsonova, sparking excitement among fans on social media for her outstanding performance.
The Polish tennis sensation has accustomed her fans to remarkable victories and dominant performances throughout the year. After a 75-week reign as World No. 1, she lost the top spot in the rankings following an early exit at the US Open, with Aryna Sabalenka taking over as the WTA Ranking leader.
Now ranked as World No. 2, Swiatek herself mentioned that she felt relieved to have the pressure off her shoulders. This week at the China Open, she once again showcased a sublime level of play.
In the final, she dominated Russia's Liudmila Samsonova with a score of 6-2, 6-2, confirming her outstanding performances throughout the week. Along the way, she defeated the 9th seed Caroline Garcia (6-7, 7-6, 6-1) and the third seed Coco Gauff (6-2, 6-3).
Swiatek's fans were delighted to see her playing at her highest level once more and praised her resilience in winning the last WTA 1000 event of the year. While the Polish star had clinched four titles this year, including the French Open, she had fallen short in WTA 1000 tournaments, losing twice in the final and three times in the semifinals.
Swiatek seized her final opportunity and secured her sixth WTA 1000 title of her career, marking her 16th career title. Here are some of the reactions to Swiatek's remarkable achievement:
“And queen 👑 she is! Congrats on her 5th 2023 title and her 16th overall! What a player!”
