The
WTA Finals field for 2026 is officially complete after Marta Kostyuk retired from her match against Ekaterina Alexandrova at the
Ningbo Open, ending her hopes of reaching the season-ending championships in Indian Wells. The Ukrainian was forced to stop after losing the opening set 6-4, allowing Karolína Muchová to secure the eighth and final singles spot.
Kostyuk entered the WTA 500 tournament knowing she needed a deep run to keep her qualification hopes alive. However, she was unable to finish her opening match in Ningbo, with her retirement bringing the race for the final place to an end. Muchová, who was not competing in Ningbo, had been waiting to discover whether her position in the Race standings would be enough to secure qualification.
The retirement was a disappointing conclusion to Kostyuk's bid to reach the prestigious event for the first time. She had been among the players fighting for the final available position alongside Muchova and Iga Swiatek, who had
already withdrawn from Ningbo because of a left thigh injury and subsequently announced that she would end her season early.
Kostyuk's physical condition also raised further concerns after the match. She called for the trainer at the end of the first set and did not continue. She later withdrew from the doubles competition in Ningbo, with a right wrist injury listed as the reason for her withdrawal.
Muchova secures final WTA Finals spot after Kostyuk retirement
Muchová's qualification completes the eight-player singles lineup for the WTA Finals, which will take place at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden from November 8 to 15. The Czech has enjoyed a strong 2026 season, winning titles in Doha and Bad Homburg and reaching four finals overall. She will make her first appearance at the season-ending tournament, having withdrawn from the 2023 edition because of injury.
The final lineup brings together several of the leading players from the season, including the world No. 1 and defending champion Elena Rybakina, four-time major champion Aryna Sabalenka and French Open winner Mirra Andreeva.
The complete singles field is as follows:
| Player | Country | Age |
| Elena Rybakina | Kazakhstan | 27 |
| Aryna Sabalenka | Belarus | 28 |
| Mirra Andreeva | Russia | 19 |
| Jessica Pegula | United States | 32 |
| Coco Gauff | United States | 22 |
| Elina Svitolina | Ukraine | 32 |
| Karolina Muchova | Czech Republic | 30 |
| Linda Noskova | Czech Republic | 21 |
Jessica Pegula and Gauff secured their places earlier in October, while Svitolina also confirmed her qualification before the final spot was decided. Noskova, meanwhile, will represent the Czech Republic alongside Muchová after an impressive season that included a Wimbledon title.
Kostyuk misses out after injury-hit end to qualification race
Kostyuk's retirement means she will not get the opportunity to compete at the WTA Finals this year, despite pushing for a place during the closing stages of the season. The Ukrainian had needed to reach the final in Ningbo to prevent Muchová from clinching the last spot, making her opening match particularly important.
Her withdrawal also follows Swiatek’s decision to end her season early. The Polish star cited a persistent left thigh problem after withdrawing from Ningbo, meaning both players saw their qualification campaigns end without completing the tournament.
For Muchova, the outcome marks a significant achievement after another productive season on tour. For Kostyuk, attention will now turn to her recovery following the wrist issue reported after her singles retirement.
With the final place decided, all eight singles competitors can now turn their attention to Indian Wells, where the season's leading players will compete for one of the most prestigious titles on the WTA calendar.
